The MS(By Research) Program of the Anna University conducted at the AU-KBC center is aimed at those students who are interested in exposure to serious research in any of the following broad domains: Communications Engineering, Computers and Networks, Life Sciences and Linguistics. It is unique in its emphasis on multidisciplinary and rigorous learning and research work. Faculty with advanced Research and Industrial experience will be involved in the teaching and research processs. Exposure to the frontiers of current technology, linkages to universities and laboratories abroad and in India, connections to global industry and entrepreneurship culture, and a vibrant intellectual atmosphere within the center, will all be a part of the program.
WHAT ARE A STUDENT'S CAREER OPTIONS AFTER THIS PROGRAM ?
The education and training received under the program will enable the student to work at the forefront of technology either in established research and design centers or in companies with a global vision, or to continue on to a Ph.D. in India or abroad. The linkages with industry and technology incubators should facilitate transition to jobs in technology, and entrepreneurship, while the strong linkages to leading academics should facilitate transition to a Ph.D. program either in India or abroad. MS Students are eligible to appear for Campus Placement along with other Anna University students.
WHO WOULD BE THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROGRAM ?
This program would be ideal for those with genuine intellectual curiosity, who think of postgraduate work not as just a stopgap occupation but as something that is likely to be enriching, rewarding and mind-expanding and leading to a serious research career. Intellectual drive and aptitude for self-learning is a must. The rigours of the learning and research process can only be sustained by those whose primary motivation and commitment is towards acquiring mastery over an area to the level of being able to contribute to it; whose ambition is to carve out a successful R & D career-either in academia, or in industry, in India or abroad.
WHAT WOULD BE THE BACKGROUND NEEDED FOR THIS PROGRAM ?
A degree in Engineering or a postgraduate degree in the Sciences and Humanities with specialisations in the appropriate areas is a must. While a background in one of the areas represented at the centre (Wireless Communication, Cryptography and Security, Natural Language Processing, Bioinformatics and Nanobiology) will certainly help, they are not totally necessary. will certainly help, they are not absolutely necessary. Similarly, while a background in mathematics and programming will be of great value, they are not an essential precondition to apply. What is necessary is a sound background in whatever area where one has been trained, and the curiosity, the drive, and the intrinsic intellectual capability to learn all material relevant to the program planned to be pursued at the centre
WHAT IS THE ADMISSION PROCESS ?
Admission will be through a written test and interview conducted during 5th - 6th Oct at the centre. The successful candidates have to identify suitable Thesis Supervisors from amongst the faculty at the centre, after which they have to obtain the application forms from the Anna University Office and file their applications on or before the 10th of Oct o2. The candidates would be admitted as per the rules and regulations of the Anna university, and they will have to register for their coursework by Nov 02, after paying all the necessary fees. etc.
WILL THERE BE FINANCIAL SUPPORT PROVIDED ?
The Centre does not provide financial support as a part of the program. However, they are eligible to draw support from any of the relevant funded R & D Programs ongoing at the Centre by contributing to it in suitable ways, as per the decision of the centre. They would also be encouraged to seek external fellowships/assistanceship from other agencies involved in country.
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
Students will need to take a 6-8 courses to earn 18 - 24 credits. It is expected that the students will take their core courses within the first six months of their stay at the center. Students will be encouraged to select a research area as soon as possible, normally within the first year as per the advice of their Supervisor who will guide the student through this problem. It is expected that the research will be of international quality, leading to a good quality publication/patent/product. While this is not a time-bound program, it is expected that the student will be able to finish all the requirements of coursework and research within two to two-and-a-half years.
