Dr. M.D. Nair, has a Ph.D. Degree from the University of Illinois, USA.  He was a Fulbright Scholar, a Fellow of the National Research Council of Ottawa, Canada, Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation, New York and Research Associate at University of Illinois before joining the Pharmaceutical Research Group of CIBA Limited, Switzerland, and later of Ciba-Geigy Research Centre in Bombay.  He worked extensively on New Drug Development, Patents, Documentation and Information Systems and Planning & Control of Production, Marketing and Clinical Trials.

 

Dr. Nair had management training in INSEAD, Fontainbleau, Paris and Management Consultancy Institute in Brussels, Belgium  and in the Corporate Office of CIBA-GEIGY, Basel, Switzerland.

 

Dr. Nair, who was later, Vice President of SPIC, was instrumental in setting up for SPIC, one of the largest antibiotic complexes in India, a 'state-of-the-art' Pharmaceutical R&D Centre, a unit for production of Medical Devices for cardiovascular surgery, a multi-purpose plant for Bulk Drugs manufacture, a Drug Formulations Plant and all the other operations of SPIC Pharmaceuticals Division.

 

Besides authoring over 80 publications in various national and international journals, he is the holder of several patents on new therapeutic agents and has co-authored three books published by Academic Press, John Wiley, Birkhauser, etc.  He is the author of Indian Pharmaceutical Market Guide 1998 published by PJB Publications, London and has contributed to the University Text Book entitled  "International Business Law" published by ITP, Washington, Pharmacists Year Book, New Delhi, Saket's Pharma Hand Book , Ahmedabad etc.

 

He has been a Consultant to WHO for setting up Pharmaceutical Projects in Arab countries,, coordinator for  the Delhi Society For Rational Use of Drugs under WHO, advisor  on Traditional Medicines and Intellectual Property Rights in New Delhi, Bangkok and Jakarta; Member of Delegation to USSR for developing Indo-USSR Collaborative Projects in Pharmaceuticals; Member of the High Power Delegation on Indian Economic Mission to Belgium; Consultant to Commonwealth Secretariat for Developing  Pharmaceutical Industries in Eastern and Southern African States, etc.

 

He has been an Advisor to Government and Private Organisations on Science & Technology, Member of the Task Forces for Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology Projects  for the Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat,  Kerala and Tamil Nadu and Director of the Boards of many Pharmaceutical Companies, Governing Councils of various Academic Bodies, Universities and Medical Institutes, Panels of Council of Scientific Research, Indian Council of Medical Research, All-India Council of Technical Education, Export Promotion Council of India, etc.  He is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and a Visiting Faculty Member of Management Institutes and Research Institutions in India.  He was a Member of the Executive Committees of Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India and Indian Drug Manufacturers Association and President of the Indian Penicillin Manufacturers Association. He has been the recipient of several Awards for his contribution to the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.

 

He is a Member of the Central Council of VHS Hospital, Chennai, Chairman of Bahuleyan Charitable Foundation,  India running a major Charity  Super Speciality  Neurosurgical Hospital in Vaikom,  Kerala, Kottakal Arya Vaidya Sala , Kerala , Advisor to Apollo Hospitals Research Foundation etc.

 

Dr. Nair is an active spokesman for the Pharmaceutical Industry and profession and through innumerable publications and presentations at national and international forums, has developed conceptual and novel approaches for the Indian industry to become a global player in R&D, Technology Development, Production and Marketing of health care products and  services.

 

Dr. Nair, after retirement from SPIC, Chennai, continues to be actively involved in industry affairs and is a Consultant to the Pharmaceutical Industry in India and abroad.  His areas of speciality include Patents, Documentation and Information Management for  the Pharmaceutical Industry, R&D Strategies and Management, Project Identification and Evaluation and Development of Biotechnology and Traditional Medicine based products.
