Seminar on Satellite Communication Systems Development
Speakers: R.Muralidharan is a GEO Payload RF systems Expert  with Orbital Sclences Corporation,USA
Date: Monday, Dec. 15th, 2008
Time and place: 11am, Downstairs Classroom , AU-KBC Research Centre

Summary:
The talk will provide a broad overview of the communications satellite systems with particular emphasis on satellite payload design and lifecycle of a GEO program from start to end. The topics covered include an overview of the communications satellite industry and the components involved , satellite payload architecture , key parameters and specifications, integration and test and in-orbit qualification. The talk will also provide an overview of a commerical RF product development cycle ( with a VSAT radio tranamitter as an example) from concept to high volume manufacturing and the issues involved including cost reduction.

R.Muralidharan - He joined Orbital in June 2006 and has been involved in the RF systems design, integration, test of multiple GEO programs for worldwide customers like MEASAT,OPTUS and SES.Prior to Orbital ,Muralidharan was a Senior Technical staff at Hughes Network systems,Maryland responsible for the development and manufacturing of RF transmiters for commercial low cost satellite terminals in C,Ku and Ka bands and RF systems architecture of the primary gateway for Thuraya Mobilesat system. Before Hughes, Muralidharan worked at the wireless division of Rockwell semiconductors ( now Skyworks ) on GSM Reference designs.Prior to that he was at CDOT-Bangalore as a program manager  and senior engineer for VSAT RF group. He started his career at SAC-Ahmedabad ISRO as an Engineer in the Payload Power Amplifier group.

Muralidharan has a B.E ( ECE) from Coimbatore Institute of Technology and MSEE from Johns Hopkins University , Baltimore.

Seminar on Security through measurement for wireless LANs

Speakers: Dr. David Kotz, Professor, Computer Science, Dartmouth [ http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~dfk/ ]
Date: Oct. 20th (Mon.)
Time and place:11am-12noon, Downstairs Classroom , AU-KBC Research Centre

Summary:

With the rise of Voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN), any complete Wi-Fi security solution must address denial of service attacks, such as kicking off other clients, consuming excessive bandwidth, or spoofing access points, to the detriment of legitimate clients. Even authorized clients may be able to sufficiently disrupt service quality to make the network ineffective for legitimate clients. Our approach provides a new foundation for wireless network security, able to dynamically measure, analyze and protect a Wi-Fi network against existing and novel threats, including rogue clients and access points, with a focus on VoWLAN use cases. Our goal is to support thousands of APs and clients, quickly recognize most new attacks, and generate few false alarms.

In this talk I present an overview of work in progress, outlining the architecture of the MAP system and describing the results of our recent experiments with adaptive network measurement and initial methods of
packet analysis.

An Institute for Security Technology Studies project at Dartmouth College in cooperation with UMass Lowell and Aruba networks.  This project is funded by the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency as part of the Cyber Security Research and Development (CSRD) program. Points of view in this presentation are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the official position of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Date: 23rd August
Time and place: 11 am, AU-KBC Research Centre

Abstract:

Femtocells have the potential to transform communications by making the mobile device the tool of choice even in home settings. These miniature base stations are the size of a DSL router or cable modem and provide indoor wireless coverage to mobile phones using existing broadband Internet connections. For end users, personal base stations will solve a number of existing problems and enable new applications and services like, High performance data, Improved Multimedia experience and Better quality of Voice etc. The presentation includes the following topics

1. Femtocell architecture and overview
2. Femto RF planning and Interference Issues
3. Femto RAN subnet architecture
4. Femto authentication and Call flow
5. Femto provisioning and start-up, Practical deployment scenarios

Seminar on Cognitive Radio Networks -- An Introduction

Speakers: R. Chandramouli and K.P. Subbalakshmi
Date: June 6th, Friday
Time and place: 3 pm, AU-KBC Research Centre

Abstract:

Cognitive radio networks is an emerging paradigm in wireless communication. The recent spectrum policy reform advocated by the FCC, would allow unlicensed users to occupy the licensed spectral bands when the licensed users are not using the bands. This is envisaged as a means of using the available spectral bands efficiently. This talk will first introduce the concept of cognitive radio networks and its implications on dynamic spectrum access networks. We will then discuss some standardization efforts in this area as well as some experimental test-bed setup. We will also discus the various security issues that come up in the design of such networks.

Speaker Bios:

R. Chandramouli is the Thomas Hattrick Chair of Information Systems Associate Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is the founding Chair of the IEEE Committee on Cognitive Networks.
