Course on Wi-Fi with FOSS
A
Report on the first batch of training during 22-30 Dec. 2006
Communications Group of AU-KBC
Research Centre, in association with the National Resource
Centre for Free and Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) conducted
a nine day training programme for the certification course
on Wi-Fi with FOSS during Dec. 22-30, 2006 at AU-KBC Research
Centre.
The objective of the Wi-Fi course is to enlighten
the participants on various aspects of IEEE 802.11 Wireless
Local Area Networks (WLAN), popularly known as WiFi. The topics
covered include the Physical layer, MAC layer concepts along
with Security issues in WLANs. The lectures on almost all
the concepts are supplemented with Lab demonstrations providing
hands-on experience with use of Open source tools in WiFi.
The hardware / software resources used for the course include
Atheros Access Points, PCMCIA Client cards, MADWiFi driver,
Ethereal Sniffer, Iperf / Jperf and Linux OS.
The training programme in Dec ‘06 had
28 participants including students and faculty from Anna University
(CEG and MIT), Crescent Engg College, K S Rangasamy College
of Technology, S.A. Engg College, Shri Andal Alagar College
of Engg., Sri Venkateswara College of Engg, SSN College of
Engg., St. Peters Engg College, Tagore Engg College, Thangavelu
Engg College, Thiagarajar College of Engg., VLB Janakiammal
Engg College, SRM University, and Vellore Institute of Technology
(VIT). There were also industry participants from M/s. Indium
Software India Ltd. (Centre of Excellence in Wireless division),
M/s. iSOFT (a M/s Sasken Communications subsidiary) and M/s.
Wipro Technologies Ltd.
The technology concepts were presented by
Dr. S. Srikanth, Prof. M. Sethuraman, Mr. Jackson Juliet Roy,
Mr. K. Bhaskar and Mr. Md. Imran of AU-KBC Research Centre.
Industry perspective on Open Source, Wi-Fi drivers and Wi-Fi
system level testing were presented by Mr. R. Vasudevan, M/s.
Atheros Communications, Mr. Sriram, M/s. Indium Software India
Ltd. and Mr. K.R. Sujith, M/s. Sura Systems. The lectures
and lab sessions were highly interactive with spirited participation
from the audience.
Certificates were distributed at the end
the course to all the participants. With the highly positive
feedback received from the participants, it is proposed to
repeat the programme in the near future.
