PROGRAMME BACKGROUND  

Bioinformatics is playing an increasingly important and central role in biological research. Moreover, bioinformatics is coming to occupy the central role of the "glue" that integrates together the many disparate bodies of data from different fields. Moreover bioinformatics has the ability to render complex questions of biology into more tangible and visual terms. The critical question of how to find the important relationships between these data to answer interesting biological questions is being solved via bioinformatics, by linking all data through their gene associations. As a practical example of this, NCBI (National Centre for Biotechnology Information), NIH's bioinformatics center, receives and processes on their bioinformatics web site nearly 3 million requests per day from scientists worldwide.  

Bioinformatics is a newly emerging interdisciplinary research area, which may be defined as the application of techniques from Computer Science to solve problems in Molecular Biology. This exciting area is a relatively young field, and the pace of research is driven by the large and rapidly increasing amount of data being produced from, for example, efforts to sequence the genomes of a variety of organisms. As on the date, more than three hundred and fifty organisms complete sequence is available and more than thousand organism sequencing work is progressing. The areas where computer science can be applied range from assembly of sequence fragments, analysis of DNA, RNA and protein sequences, prediction and analysis of protein sequence and function.  Bioinformatics is certainly not number crunching for molecular biologists, but is about the application of techniques from Computer Science such as modeling, simulation, data abstraction, data manipulation and pattern discovery techniques in order to analyze biological data. The data generated by the experimental scientists requires annotation and detailed analysis in order to turn it into knowledge which can then be applied to improving health care via, for example, new drugs and gene therapy, medical practices, and food production - all of which are now high-profile issues.  

Bioinformatics tools and databases are powerful, valuable, and essential for life science research in the Genomic Age. However, they are also complicated, diverse, poorly interconnected, and largely mysterious to the majority of biologists. This training programme aims to solve this problem. It will give students, researchers and scientists a place to go to get the best of bioinformatics in a single step, that lets them focus on results, as well as expert help on their problems and questions. The training will provide the computing expertise to bridge the gap between biologist's real-world research problems and the right bioinformatics solution. This training program will also play an major role in preparing the new generation of scientists, not only in the use of tools or in the development of computational techniques, but also in providing the necessary background to tackle basic biological questions. 

This 5-day Certificate Course on Bioinformatics covers key topics in this area ranging from Tools and databases in Genomics to Systems Biology. The method of instruction is in a tutorial format and organized around live demos with exercises. Computers will be provided to participants for practice. The program methodology is designed to closely match the requirements of Students, Researchers and Scientists.

AUDIENCE 

The programme is targeted towards Graduate and Post–graduate students in Science, Engineering and Technology / Life Science Scientists / Medicine / Pharma, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology Faculty / PhD scholars / PDF’s.

The presentation will be in a tutorial style and participant’s interaction will be strongly encouraged. For each topic, bird’s eye view will be given in the beginning and a list of tools and databases used also provided. Important tools in each topic will be demonstrated with few examples and later students can practice. For all categories, exercise will be given to get hands on experience. Course material in the form CD will be given to each participant with software collection.

The course fee is Rs. 7,500 /- and for students a concessional rate of Rs. 5,500 /- is available on request. Group of 5 students registering together will be charged Rs.5, 000/- each.

Lunch will be provided for participants attending the program. Participation certificate will be given at the end of the programme.
