Kiliyur Balakrishnan Chandrasekhar (“Chandra”) was born in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India, in 1961. He got his Bachelor's degree in Science (B.Sc.) from the Madras University (Vivekananda College, Chennai)) in 1980, and the bachelor’s degree (B. Tech.) in Electronics Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) campus of Anna University in 1983. He was awarded the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Anna University in Nov.2006.
Chandra began his career in 1983 at Wipro, an Indian information technology company. In 1990, he moved to the United States as country manager for Rolta India, Chandra started his first entrepreneurial venture in 1992 with Fouress, Inc., a network software design and development firm. In 1994, Chandra identified the potential of the Internet and co-founded Exodus Communications Inc. which went public in March of 1998 in one of the most successful IPO's of the year. He co-founded, and is the Chairman of e4e Inc., a global technology holding company and full-service operating enterprise. He is also the co-founder, CEO, and Chairman of Jamcracker,Inc., an on-demand software company. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aztec Software & Technology Services Limited. Chandra is actively involved in assisting entrepreneurs and is currently associated with more than 20 entrepreneurship ventures in which he has invested.
In 1999 Chandra was honored with the Ernst & Young Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He was also the Chairman of the Venture Capital Committee of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), member of the Committee of Overseas Indians of Min of I.T., Govt. Of India, one of the earliest promoters and a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), etc.
Seeing the need for interdisciplinary research in the areas of Information Sciences and Life Sciences, K B Chandrasekhar set up the AU-KBC Research Centre in 1999 at his alma mater. The Research Centre represents a pioneering manifestation of Chandra’s conviction that R&D in the Public-Private-Partnership mode has a big role to play in realizing India’s dream of becoming a “Knowledge Superpower”. As its Co-founder and Co-Chairman, he has been supporting and nurturing the Research Centre der to enable it to contribute to the economic growth and social well being of India through its research and education activities. In order to convert the R&D output of the Centre into Products that are ready for the market, Chandra also set up Svapas Innovations in Chennai that works closely with the Research Centre.
Chandra lives in Cupertino, California, with his wife and three children.
