Koha Activities @AU-KBC
The AU-KBC Research Centre (Anna University, Chennai) has actively utilized and implemented Koha, the open-source Integrated Library System (ILS), to automate and network various academic and public libraries across Tamil Nadu.
Key initiatives and uses at AU-KBC include:
- Library Automation Projects: AU-KBC has been a technology partner for the automation and networking of multiple public libraries, including the Connemara Library, District Central Libraries and Taluk Libraries in Tamil Nadu, implementing Koha as the core.
- District Central Libraries Automation: AU-KBC successfully executed the automation and networking of 32 District Central Libraries in Tamil Nadu using the Koha LMS platform.
- Taluk Libraries Expansion: The center has spearheaded ongoing and recently completed initiatives for the Automation and Networking of Taluk Libraries across Tamil Nadu.
- Operating System Upgrades & Maintenance: Funded by the Directorate of Public Libraries (DPL), Government of Tamil Nadu, AU-KBC manages localized upgrades and operating system adaptations for Koha deployments within the state's public library framework.
- Workshops and Training: The center has organized training programs and workshops—frequently in collaboration with bodies like the Madras Library Association (MALA)—to train library professionals on deploying and customizing Koha.
- System Customization: AU-KBC has integrated Koha with Linux Operating System and utilized its open-source capabilities to provide localized solutions for multilingual library environments.
- Local Language Adaptation: Leveraged by AU-KBC’s core strength in Indian Language Computing, these projects support Indian languages, enhancing localized user interfaces and search parameters for Tamil Nadu's library
Overview of Koha Features Implemented
The deployments handled by AU-KBC leverage Koha's scalable open-source framework, which includes:
- Centralized Cataloguing: Standardized data entry using international rules like MARC21 format.
- Web-Based OPAC: Providing library patrons with a flexible, Google-like search bar interface to access physical books and catalogue information.
- Integrated Modules: End-to-end management spanning acquisition, member management, serials tracking, and circulation routines, receipt generation, report generation, fine calculations, SMS alerts- Fine alerts, Membership status, books renewal date, book borrowed etc
